Squirrels
Pest Category
Rodent
Do they carry disease?
Yes
Do they cause structural damage?
Squirrels can and do cause holes in structures and rooves by chewing their way in. While the damage is usually not severe, it can give access to other pests and even cause roof leaks. What is more concerning, is a squirrels habit of chewing on wood/wiring and other mechanical/electrical parts of a structure.
Other damage
Squirrels can cause large amounts of damage to insulation in attic areas as well leave large amounts of droppings and urine stain when untreated
Signs to look for
Noises are a sure sign. Unlike rats, squirrels tend to be much more active in the early morning and during the day, then sleeping at night. Anytime squirrels are consistently noticed near a structure a homeowner should be aware.
Where they are noticed?
Squirrels are not hard to spot. They are found usually in higher places and noise is a good indicator as well as the squirrels themselves being noticed around a structure.
Habits
More active during the day, constantly in pursuit of warmth, shelter and food, which is why living in structures is ideal for squirrels.
If Untreated...
The amount of damage will increase as well as the number of squirrels living within the structure. The larger the population gets, the more damage is done and the more expensive the remedy becomes.
Tips
Bird feeders and pet food left outside are a magnet for the animals.
