Pest | Hornets - Bald Faced Hornet |
Pest category | Wasp |
Do they Carry Disease? | No |
Do They Cause Structural Damage? | Only if found nesting inside. |
Other Damage? | Venomous. Possible allergic reaction. |
Signs to Look For | Large wasps, 1 to 2 inches. Primarily black in color with white markings on the thorax and abdomen. |
Where are they noticed? | They are seen everywhere in the warmer months, foraging for food like other species. They build oval shaped paper nests that can be found in trees, shrubs and attached to eaves on homes. |
Habits | Known to be very aggressive when provoked. The hives are dormant during the winter. New hives are created every spring. The hives grow much larger as the warm season progresses; workers in these hives can number in the thousands. |
If Untreated... | Possible stings to people or pets. |
Tips | Perform a preventative, exterior wasp treatment around the outside of a structure each spring and fall, which will greatly reduce the wasp population before they have a chance to build any significant hives. The lower the wasp population, the less chance of wasp problems. |
